EDIT: no matter how i sort the list NYC comes out as one of the safest cities in US.
NYC used to have a bad reputation as a crime city but that was back in the 1980s with the crack epidemic and so on – since the 1990s (Giuliani mayor) it seems to have been low crime ever since. I guess the crackdowns worked.
I’m not sure what’s wrong with NYC because I’ve never lived there – just visited – but the one thing I remember everyone bitching about in the NYC metro was cost of living. I assumed that for young and aspiring middle class types it just gets too expensive to live and raise a family. For example there was my cousin who loved it out there but had to come back to the Mid-West to have a normal existence of marriage/home/kids, along with friends and contacts I met who spent time out there saying the same thing.
I would guess that’s part of it, but I’m not sure it explains all of it.
Also LOL that Minneapolis or Des Moines have higher crime rates than NYC.
It seems that while NYC has the appearance of being a liberal city it is actually a police state, even still (as the numbers have not materially changed since the time of Giuliani and Bloomberg) after mayors like Bill Wilhelm “de Blasio” et al.
cost of living in NYC is low as long as you live in a studio apartment and use public transportation. that doesn’t work for raising a family though so nobody in NYC has kids. NYC replenishes the population entirely through immigration which today means India and China
if you want an affordable HOUSE you need to be 50 miles away from Manhattan like i am at which point you’re looking at 2 hour commute ONE WAY which in turn realistically means that unless you hate yourself you will not go to Manhattan more than once a week
that was my original plan - to come to Manhattan once a week or so - and in fact my mother is on that schedule - she visits me on the weekends - but spends most of the week in a NYC apartment and no car ( she takes the bus here ).
but i love myself too much so instead of commuting to Manhattan once week it has in practice turned out to be ONCE A YEAR. for example the last time i was in Manhattan was to get my passport made. and before that it was just passing through on the way to Boston.
at which point it begs the question - why am i tethering myself to Manhattan if i never go there ? i might as well tether myself to Miami and never go there. LOL.
yeah now that i think of it - it wasn’t fear of crime that motivated me to move out from NYC
it was two things:
1 - the constant clamping down on car drivers - lower speed limits, less parking, more speed cameras and speed bumps - every year it was getting worse ( and still is, and will continue to get worse )
2 - the feeling of being RAPIDLY replaced by non-whites. when i came to America the part of NYC i was in ( South Brooklyn ) was split evenly between Jews, Russians and Italians with Mexicans doing the dirty jobs. By the time i was leaving a Chinese Uber driver was telling me that Italians have moved out of NYC and have been replaced by the Chinese … and he was right … but also they were replaced by Indians and Russians like me have also moved out - some to Florida, some to New Jersey.
when i was moving out to New Jersey i told myself i wasn’t moving out - that i was still a New Yorker just living in the suburbs - but quickly realized that was a cope. i wasn’t a New Yorker anymore.
then i told myself that i lived in Princeton ( as in Princeton University ) because i worked out there at LifeTime athletic, but on the night of elections when Trump was seemingly winning the black janitors there ( LifeTime is open to midnight ) had a meltdown and got in my face about using 5 lockers when 3 out of 4 lockers were zip tied for the pandemic and i quit LifeTime and switched to a local gym.
so then i realized that telling myself i am in Princeton was cope too since i was no longer coming there, and a home in Princeton is too expensive.
then i was forced to face the fact that i am actually NOWHERE.
but if am going to be nowhere anyway why not be somewhere with nice weather like Orlando ?
i was going to fly there on Friday and then today i look and there is hurricane Erin headed towards Florida
Those stats are meaningless. If you look at murder per capita ok fine, but what about getting piped in the head while walking in NYC - shit that doesnt happen in Miami at all for example. On top of everything here in FL anyone can conceal carry so that type of behavior that is common in NYC really ends fast here. Miami afaik is the last city in America where you can wear $250,000 watch out the open and nothing happens - literally streets filled with people wearing houses on their necks and wrists and there are no snatch and grabs going on.
P.S. As boomers die off and demographics of this country will resemble demo’s of the world where whites are a minority, and you are already starting to see

What OFSH said is correct - my first priority is to never live in a liberal city again, which also means if where I live starts to turn liberal I will leave BEFORE that happens (as I did not last time, and my area got targeted by Soros and turned into a dystopia in record time).
Where I am currently, that also means not living inside the 7-county metro area because if you do, a portion of your municipal taxes are taken and given to nonwhite settlement areas that are poor. So I don’t want to pay in. And if they try to spread the liberal agenda out into the exurbs where I currently am, eventually I will just get sick of it and leave the entire area. Life’s too short to put up with this.
The good news is that cities in the Mid-West are still fairly white but you really don’t want to be in the inner city areas – they are invariably shitholes because of liberal policies there. The suburbs are OK for now, but the taxes and cost of living in Minneapolis region are getting too high. I treat the inner cities as no-go zones for the most part. I do not go to Minneapolis anymore, at all.
Median house price in Minneapolis metro is above Chicago metro now, LOL, and it’s considered a “medium cost of living” area. It’s not. Housing prices are well over double what they were when my parents first moved here.
