well regardless i am in Orlando right now. i am trying to leave NYC metro.

most people including @Alkiphron think the problem in NYC is high cost of living. actually the problem is LOW cost of living.

it is easier to make ends meet in NYC than almost anywhere on earth. all you have to do is live in a closet size apartment and commute by public transit. NYC is one of the few places on earth where you can live on minimum wage. you just can’t have kids in NYC ( regardless of your income ).

the reason low cost of living is a problem is because the poor end up being stuck in NYC while the better-off end up moving to places like Miami as @OldFriendSaysHello did. as poor immigrants keep coming in from China and India and well-off Americans keep leaving NYC overtime it becomes a cesspool.

what makes NYC so affordable is the fact that wages are decent, jobs are plentiful and you completely eliminate the need to have a car. plus if you live in apartment you also have basically no expenses related to home maintenance - the building superintendent will fix your clogged drain for you and if you feel generous you can give him a $20 tip for it.

by contrast in NJ i had a small plumbing issue - the plumber took about an hour to fix it - and charged $800 for it. no wonder the average income in NJ is 3X that of NYC - you NEED to be making that much to survive in NJ because your expenses will be that much higher.

this is also why i am not keen on staying in NJ - it’s fucking expensive.

as for Florida the problem is low wages. about 20% less than NYC or Boston.

everything is a trade off.
