here is Tesla Model Y rear subframe:
and here is Mercedes EQS:
aside from the fact that EQS subframe is cast aluminum and Model Y is stamped steel observe the size of the round rubber vibration isolating mounts on the two frames. The ones on Tesla are significantly smaller to further save cost.
Rubber: $2,500 per ton
Aluminum: $3,000 per ton
Steel: $1,500 per ton
considering also that casting is more expensive than stamping and that Model Y is 1,200 lbs lighter than EQS we can assume the EQS subframe costs about 3X as much to make as the Model Y subframe.
keep in mind also this subframe sits on the bottom of the car and gets sprayed by water anytime it is wet. steel rusts. aluminum doesn’t. Tesla frame is painted black in an attempt to slow down the rusting but you can already see the rust forming. which is OK though because Tesla is disposable junk anyway ( all EVs are to be honest ).
now granted, the Model Y is half the price of EQS but Tesla fuckboys will tell you that those are good things. that this is evidence of Elon’s genius that he is able to make cars for so much less !
but reality is Tesla doesn’t even make that subframe. it’s made for them by a third party in Canada.
the actual reason Tesla is cheaper and lighter than Mercedes is the same why Toyota Yaris is cheaper and lighter than Lexus LS. because it’s a fucking tin can.
Tesla at its core is an ultra cheap economy car that is camouflaged to appear as a luxury sports car but dig deep enough and you will see what it actually is.
it is SHIT.
granted, EQS is also shit - you shouldn’t buy any kind of EV - but at least you can see the difference between Mercedes quality and Tesla “quality”
if you want an actual quality car buy a Combustion Lexus or Mercedes. Porsche and BMW are honorable mentions here because BMW quality is a bit sketchy while Porsche maintenance costs are outrageous. Still, i would recommend any of those over a Tesla.
Get a Lexus if you can. Quality, Reliability and Service are all world class. Personally though i just never found a Lexus i would want to drive, but i got my parents a Lexus because they are less discerning than i am.
