if you’re going to watch these films watch them in Chronological order that is 2001 ( 1968 ) first then Solaris ( 1972 ).

i watched both but unfortunately in the wrong order, which is really dumb, because Solaris was Tarkovsky’s response to 2001 …
the title of video below is “which is better” but it’s just clickbait - the actual video is not nearly as dumb as the title would have you believe …
as another video mentioned “2001” was a US propaganda film glorifying the Space Race with the Soviet Union, much like “Top Gun Maverick” is a propaganda film for US military …
“2001” was also meant to glorify technology in general, as a key that will allow humans to evolve to a higher level, perhaps reaching immortality - basically Transhumanist propaganda …
“Solaris” is a rejection of all of that, basically saying that everything it is really between Man and God and that Technology is pretty much useless and just ruins everything.
in “2001” women are pin up dolls, family is an afterthought, and friendship is not a thing. in “Solaris” family is everything, a woman is the central character, and friendship at least exists. whereas of course in “2001” the central character is Technology.
i suppose i agree with Tarkovsky’s assessment that “2001” is “phony” … much in the same way as “Top Gun Maverick” is phony …
but it is a landmark film regardless and the fact that Tarkovsky felt the urge to respond to it only cements that status …
Technology is shown to have a bad side in 2001: to get to soaring in the heavens takes millions of years of murder and death as shown in the ape scene.
We live as apes on the ground until we take to the heavens.
But Tarkovsky is right: technology is just a tool for us to satisfy our urges: food, sex, power.
I read the book and watched the Clooney version but I may have to watch the original Solaris.
the idea that greater intelligence only makes us more efficient killers until we reach some ultimate level of enlightenment hopefully when the trend will hopefully shift to something else …
yet to be honest with you the god of the bible was more keen on destroying things than on creating them …

i guess i’m not really a Transhumanist in the sense that i don’t believe it should be our goal to evolve into something greater - similar to Tarkovsky i just want to masturbate to porn ( or sleep with a Solaris Waifu ) - rather i just think this evolution is inevitable.
we will either continue to progress or continue to regress. one thing is for sure a million years from now we won’t be anything like we are now.
