"minimum driver" vs Line Array system

i came up with “minimum driver” terminology just now to describe a system i recently designed and will soon document on this site

the system uses curved array elements mixed in with true point sources but is overall designed to emulate point source behavior because that ultimately allows a MINIMUM NUMBER OF DRIVERS to achieve a given SPL target

this is as opposed to a LINE ARRAY which use MORE drivers that are necessary to achieve the SPL target and instead the drivers are just padding out the length of the array to make sure there are no gaps which would result in audible anomalies

see related discussion here: Matching horns with arrays

i had to come up with “minimum driver” terminology because i need to call that system something but calling it “point source” seems a bit misleading.

i wanted to have one thread for the “point source system” and one for “line array system” but instead i will go with “minimum driver system” and “line array system”

because it is NOT QUITE point source.

a Danley synergy horn is a true point source and i didn’t want to mislead anybody into thinking my system would be like that, while also having a way to differentiate it from the line array system.

hence - minimum driver system !
