this is a big deal …
this is a big deal …
Steer By Wire is the underlying tech that makes Yoke steering “wheel” possible.
Tesla notoriously released the Yoke on Model S without steer by wire because Tesla is a joke. People were paying money to replace the Yoke with a round wheel in the aftermarket until Elon finally allowed people to buy Model S with a normal wheel.
Then CyberTruck came out and it finally had steer by wire but it was laughably bad - noticeably lagging to the point where it was even easily visible in videos - like playing a video game over dialup connection
So Mercedes isn’t the first to come out with Steer by Wire or a Yoke but guess what - it isn’t about being the first - it’s about being the best
Elon famously said that the way you get ahead as a company is through “pace of innovation”
but what idiot investors do not understand is that there is nothing that inherently makes it possible for one company to be ahead of others because ultimately the industry moves forward as a whole …
instead the PERCEPTION of being ahead is achieved by:
1 - announcing products that won’t exist for years
2 - releasing products before they are ready
Tesla is famous for doing both ALL THE TIME and that’s what Elon’s “pace of innovation” meant in reality
as for why Mercedes will debut the tech on the EQS it’s because this is a solution in search of a problem and that’s who EQS is for - people who want tech for the sake of tech.
you could definitely increase performance with this tech but the price is the removal of a physical link to the wheels which is potentially dangerous.
Elon of course never cared about safety but Mercedes does care to some extent. This is why they come out with it years after Tesla and offer it as an OPTION rather than standard.
That said all modern jumbo jets use fly by wire so in that sense the tech could be considered mature but we’re talking about very expensive planes and they can afford to take extra steps to make sure the system is safe. Would Tesla ever spend the money to make their system safe ? We are talking about a company that builds cars in tents, makes suspensions out of plastic that is held together by zip ties and sells cars before proper tires or brakes are available …
anyway this steer by wire tech is almost certainly the future, but that doesn’t mean you should rush out to get it now.
Tesla is all about selling people the lie that they can live in the future - you can’t. You can live in the lie though.
Tesla influencers like to say “car buying is an IQ test” with the implication being that if you buy a Tesla your IQ is higher … here is the problem though - IQ cannot be increased.
Believing your IQ will go up if you buy a Tesla is like believing you will become taller if you play Basketball.
Tesla is the ultimate Dunning Kruger mobile for stupid people who want others to think they are smart. This used to work in the past but i think that gravy train has run out. The cat is out of the bag. People now understand that Tesla is a joke.
by the way forgot to mention the yoke makes no sense unless the dashboard is designed for it
in F1 for example the screen is on the yoke itself
and to be honest with you guys if you even get excited about cars at all you’re a fucking retard because cars just got so retarded that i can’t take anything they do seriously anymore …
99% of everything happening in the industry is a joke just like in the Audiophile / DIY Audio sphere …
Steer by Wire is good - but why the yoke ? you can put steer by wire on a round wheel - but then how will people know it’s steer by wire ?
see the point ?
it’s all about marketing - not making things better.
always was to be honest - i just wasn’t cynical enough to see it.
reminds me when Cadillac first put LED tail lights on their car and said because LED has faster response time than incandescent it can prevent crashes because the light illuminates sooner …
i thought wow that is very cool !
then i saw all the cars putting LEDs on the marker lights and leaving brake lights incandescent and i was like - but this defeats the purpose ?
LOL
but the purpose was always styling. why put LEDs on brake lights that are only on 5% of the time when you can put them on marker lights that are on 100% of the time so everybody sees you have a new and expensive car.
who cares about safety when the important part is letting everybody know you’re a baller !
UGH - everything was always like this and always will be and i just hope it all ends sooner rather than later LOL
