this JBL paper titled “Characteristics of high frequency compression drivers”
https://jblpro.com/es/site_elements/tech-note-characteristics-of-high-frequency-compression-drivers
is WRONG !
this whole “mass break point” is bullshit. the formula for it is even more bullshit.
i can’t believe this BS. the formula is completely fake. it takes in motor force factor ( BL^2 / Re ) and moving mass ( MMS ) and puts out a frequency. a frequency can only be calculated from things like speed of sound and wavelength which in turn can only be calculated from dimensions and the formula doesn’t take any of this as input. it is TOTALLY FAKE AND BULLSHIT FORMULA.
and “mass break point” itself is totally fake and bullshit. there is no explanation anywhere on the internet what it is - because it isn’t real ! it only applies as stated to the JBL drivers mentioned in the paper
JBL claims all compression drivers have this “substantially the same” mass break point but newer and better drivers do not have it, at least not in the way the paper says.
the take home point is - don’t believe everything you read just because it comes from a “reputable” source and looks scientific. it is sometimes wrong ( as in that ProSoundWeb article ) and sometimes PURE BULLSHIT like here.
