A philosophical question for all of you but mostly OFSH

Question: what is stopping VW group from making a car like this production ?

an Audi R8 that has 2,500 hp and is the fastest car in Europe

the actual R8 never got turbos and in fact was completely discontinued

the answer is - that big automakers aren’t interested in making cars go faster

they brainwash young men into believing that they are struggling to make cars as fast as possible - but in reality they aren’t trying at all

i know what you’re thinking - this 2,500 hp R8 is completely unreliable - they can’t sell a car like this

true … they can’t sell a car built in a garage with a warranty … but they could massage this car into something reliable enough to sell and still have over 1,000 hp. instead they just discontinued the R8.

because they would rather sell a car like this with a Lambo badge on it, or some other fancy badge and corresponding price.

only financially struggling automakers offer All-Out-Performance models like Tesla Plaid or Dodge Charger Hellcat because they are clutching at straws. they seen narrow openings in the market and they jump at them. companies like VW and Toyota can’t be bothered.

what is my point you ask ?

my point is that if VW can build fast cars but doesn’t - it means that you probably don’t need them.

people who buy Lambos buy them not because Lambo is fast but because it’s fancy. same as why people buy expensive swiss watches - not because they tell time better - but because they are fancy.

if you can accept this then your options widen considerably. you are no longer limited to “performance bargains” like Tesla Plaid, Charger Hellcat etc. because you understand that it’s not about performance per dollar.

OFSH probably thinks i’m trying to gaslight him into getting a slow car so that his friends all laugh at him …

well to be honest your friends probably will not understand. this is why i don’t have friends because i can’t limit myself to what other people are able to understand or accept. this strategy probably won’t work for an extravert.

but the main purpose of this “what makes a car good” forum category is to make a point that acceleration is not really all that important.

the purpose of a car is not to accelerate any more than the purpose of a swiss watch is to tell time … instead in both cases the purpose is to say something about you …

your car is supposed to represent your personal style …

putting turbos on an R8 to double its power doesn’t change what that car says about you - it’s still an Audi R8 as far as anybody is concerned …

just think of what you want your car to say about you and how you want it to feel when you drive it. don’t be so concerned with which car is faster than which in a race.

you don’t owe it to anybody to race them ! ! !

by the way i don’t know if this R8 actually has 2,500 hp but i do know automakers leave a lot on the table.

for example the early Koenigseggs basically used Ford engines that were modified to produce over 1,000 hp …

there is just this huge disconnect between what manufacturers are concerned about and what customers think they are trying to do …

for example audiophiles think that high-end audio makers are trying to produce the most accurate and best sound … in reality they just want to produce the most impressive looking packaging in terms of things like premium finishes and so on.

of course no high-end audio maker will admit that sound quality is an afterthought in their product. and no sports car maker will admit that performance is an afterthought in their car.

BUT THAT’S THE TRUTH.

facing this truth can save you a lot of money and headache.

this is a 2-step process

the first step is to realize you don’t have to spend a lot to get performance

the second and more important step is to realize you don’t actually need performance

you think you do because that’s what everybody talks about so it must be important - but those people are literally idiots who have no clue

once you realize that you will be free

and here is the R8 tuned for track / handling

so they could make an R8 that handles like a race car

and they could make an R8 that accelerates like a Rimac

but instead - they just discontinued it

understand - the cynicism of these people at VW is on the same level as that of Klaus Schwab

they are playing mind games with you - don’t fall for it

ignore all their yapping about engineering, pedigree, performance blah blah blah - they don’t care about any of that stuff - all they care about is money

cars are basically like women

we love them but they don’t love us back

they are soul-less parasites

you already know that, when it comes to women, part of game is not allowing yourself to catch feelings

i think it might be prudent to adopt a similar approach with cars as they are also using psychological manipulation against us just as women do

the problem is that you can’t psychologically manipulate a car the way you can do with a woman …

on other hand you can sometimes score crazy lease deals but only if you are dispassionate and look at a car as just a value proposition and not something emotional …

again, just thinking out loud, feel free to disregard …
